Reno-Sparks Open Streets is coming to Reno on Sunday, July 31, 2016 and to Sparks on Saturday, August 20th, 2016!

What is Reno-Sparks Open Streets?

People traffic replaces car traffic, and the streets become 'paved parks’.

Reno-Sparks Open Streets promotes healthy active living through a series of free events opening the city's largest public space - its streets - to walk, bike, roll, and discover active transportation while fostering civic pride, stimulating economic development, and represents the community, business, and government investments in Reno's vitality, livability, and diversity.

Open Streets is part of the Cyclovia movement that is spreading throughout the United States and the world aimed at promoting healthy, vibrant communities. The Open Streets Project began in early 2010, when Street Plans began examining the breadth and diversity of open streets initiatives in the United States and Canada.

Ciclovia's are largely credited to have started in Bogota, Columbia where each Sunday and public holiday from 7 am until 2 pm certain main streets of Bogotá, Cali, Medellín, and other municipalities are blocked off to cars for runners, skaters, and bicyclists. At the same time, stages are set up in city parks. Aerobics instructors, yoga teachers and musicians lead people through various performances. Bogotá's weekly ciclovías are used by approximately 2 MILLION PEOPLE (about 30% of the population) on over 120 km of car-free streets.
